Buzzard Droppings February 2008

Text Box: Here we are already in the second month of a New Year. It was just a few weeks ago that Ron was nudging me to get the February 2007 newsletter Safety Column written.

Saturday morning at the field was cold no wind to speak of. Let’s just say that the wind chill matched the measured temperature (remember last months Safety Corner). Still, the cold was unbearable with bare hands behind a running engine. Maybe there is something to
the wind chill chart in last month’s column.

I trust that you are all busy in the shop (model room) getting your new Belch Fire
180 or KiloWatt Ever ready for the annual Builders Contest. While you are in the
shop are you thinking safety or just building and hoping that by blind luck nothing
will fall off of the plane and it will stay in the air. Remember Murphy “If can happen
it will”. Pay attention to the glue joints, use the proper adhesive for the job at hand
- even it means taking the time to mix a batch of epoxy and doing it right when it
would be quicker to use CA. Most of the younger builders have never used the
acetone based cements. If you do use them, do so in a well ventilated area.
Unless of course you are looking for a cheap high and the headache that will follow.
Anytime that you are using paints, solvent and such, know what they are used for,
read the direction and the safety warning on the label. If they say to use in a
ventilated area, then use it in a ventilated area. If they say use safety glass, then
use safety glasses. Also note what to do if you get the stuff in your eyes or ingest
some. Most of us don’t intentionally drink the stuff, but once in a while things
happen.

Wear shoes while working on your plane. It might sound funny, but on a couple of
occasions I have had the trusty X-acto drop off the table and try to impale my foot.
One time it stuck into the floor between my big toe and next one. Another time it
stuck into the top of a pair of slippers I was wearing. Be careful! Must be the
Murphy thing again, the point always seems to go where it can do the most
damage.

Don’t forget to come to the Hobby Expo. the 9th an 10th of February

UNTIL NEXT TIME, BE SAFE BE COURTEOUS
