Text Box: Last year in the April column, I included most current version of the BBMAC Safety Rules. I think it is a good time for a review, so I have included them again this year. (See page 6). Print it if needed...
Jim Reynolds related a story at the March meeting about the dangers of glow fuel, you are probably thinking, another fire related story—Wrong! It seems that Jim covers his bench with a towel to protect the finish of his plane. On this occasion, some fuel leaked from the airplane onto the towel. He was working away with his hands resting on the towel, not giving any thought to the fuel it contained. Later, he became aware of a burning sensation on his hands. The burning was a chemical burn caused by exposure to the Methanol and Nitromethane (and possibly other stuff that makes the fuel we use in our glow engines work so well). As he relates the story, it happened maybe six weeks ago and you can still see evidence of the damage on his skin.
I will not repeat the entire safety warning that is on a jug (can) of fuel., but a couple of the highlights. CONTENTS HARMFUL- CONTENTS MAY CATCH FIRE- DO NOT SWALLOW

FIRST AID TREATMENT for our FUELS:
Contains: Methanol, Nitromethane, and non-petroleum lubricants.
If swallowed, call a Poison Control Center or doctor immediately.
If person is alert, induce vomiting.
If in eyes or on skin, rinse well with water. If on clothes, remove clothes.
If breathed in, move person into fresh air, get prompt medical attention!”
As printed on the label of Morgan Fuel, Omega

The February column discussed following the label’s instructions for the safe use of the product. Glow fuel and gasoline we use as fuel are no exception. Please don’t misuse the common and exotic products we use in the hobby. We need your dues next year and we sure don’t want to miss a day of flying to attend a funeral (he he!).

SO, UNTIL NEXT TIME, BE SAFE, BE COURTEOUS
Vince Bell, Safety Officer
