Thanks Ron for always helping us fulfill this prestigious award !

Program

Jay Wellan talked about sound management and the exposure harm to loud noises. Basically, we can withstand short durations of noise above 90 dB and above without harm.  But it might be a nuisance to neighbors or local communities at any level! He feels that this is the main reason that we were turned for one possible field is location near condos across the Snoqualmie River. Since this land is probably zoned agricultural, it would normally have  a 44 to 50 dB background sound level. When we’re running a standard .40 or .46 size engine the sound pressure reading is around 92 dB or higher (measured at  3 meters on the ground). The apparent noise can be perceived as loud as the plane flies due to the engine exhaust and more specifically the sound of the propeller tips as they approach 85% of the speed of sound or more. From our end it might sound quiet, but we’re not always on the receiving end. These are just some things to think about when we’re looking at locations and getting our hopes up.

Jay suggested that we adhere to the rule of testing and running up engines on the table behind the shed. Besides, it’s annoying to have an engine running away while we’re at the pilot stations.

Nice job, Jay !

Show and Tell

Fred brought his Giant size Rascal, went over some of the details and Zenoah engine. By the way, it’s For Sale !

Scott Curtis brought his Combat plane that he’s building (thanks to a mid-air collision at the last combat event) and showed just how easy they are to build, the areas to watch for and building techniques that work for him. Scott has had great success with these models, they hold up well, really take a beating, assemble easily and are relatively inexpensive.  Thanks Scott !

Announcements

Charlie Higgins brought info about the BEAMS Day in the hanger at Boeing. You must have completed the registration and submitted by 3/17 even to go as a spectator. Donations are welcomed at the door.

Chet emailed the info out to all members that have email access.

Fred asked that if anyone has a flat trailer that can haul the mower if needed in a flood, please contact him.

Vince was awarded a great looking plaque made by Sandy for the Dave Weber Special Service Award for a photo opportunity.

Vince has an 8mm film projector in working order. We have been given a couple of films of vintage aircraft that might be interesting to see (if Vince remembers to bring the projector).

Fred and some of us guys get together every Sat. possible for breakfast at 8:00 am, then go to the field for flying weather permitting. Currently we’re harassing the waitresses, solving world problems and hanging out at Patty’s Eggnest in the Albertson’s Plaza, on the east end of Monroe. C’mon out and join with the confusion !!

Chet asked that everyone send him a quick “test” email. If you haven’t been receiving the monthly or special notices via email, he doesn’t have your address. Chet’s email is  chetblake@comcast.net   Meeting Adjourned 8:55 Respectfully submitted, Chet Blake BBMAC Secretary
