Buzzard Droppings October 2005

This is the Herr Engineering LITTLE EXTRA ARF

manufactured by SIG.

It is a 1/2A plane that is powered by a Norvel .074 glow

engine that turns an APC 7 x 3 sport prop.  The fuel tank is 2

ounces in size.  Wing span is 36.5” with a length of 34.75”

and a wing area of 344 sq. in..  All up weight of 29 ounces.

The control surfaces are driven by HiTec HS-55 servos, of

which there are a total of 5 in the aircraft.  The receiver is a

JR 610UL 6 channel receiver powered by a 720ma NiMH

battery pack which is the same weight as the suggested

275ma Nicad battery pack.

The aircraft is capable of lifting off from the club’s grass field with no problems, even with the wheel pants mounted.  The wheel pants might actually be helping by partly acting as skis when the grass is fairly thick.

The plane is quite capable of lively aerobatic flight.  Rolls are axial with minimal elevator input, loops (inside and outside) are reasonable in size but the plane does not have unlimited vertical.  The plane is capable of knife-edge flight as well as most standard aerobatics.

I usually fly the plane at about three quarter throttle throughout most of the flight and average 10 – 11 minutes.  It is possible to put in a larger tank to get even greater flight time.  The plane is quite responsive and lively.  Landings are fairly straightforward but this is not a beginner’s plane.

The construction for a ARF was very good.  No modifications were made to the airframe.
