Buzzard Droppings October 2004

(President’s Message  continued from page 1)

club officer, let us know! Bob mentioned he would NOT be running for club Secretary for next year and Doug mentioned that if we could find another member to take over as Treasurer, he would be glad to turn that over. Consider taking on one of the officer positions and get yourself nominated. We will vote for the new club officers during our December meeting, which will be held in our traditional annual location, Alfy’s Pizza in Monroe in the plaza on the North side of Route 2. The club pays for the pizza and soft drinks for all who attend this meeting, so please plan to be there! I have already reserved the room at Alfy’s from 7-8:30 PM.

Doug is working on a proposed budget for 2005 and the board will be making a recommendation for next year’s dues based on the budget. I believe, based on a conversation

a-potty service has been requested.

Vice President:

Brian stated that the club’s 2nd fun fly was held and all who entered had a great time.

Secretary:

Bob reported that we had one new member this month, bringing the total membership to 65. Also, that he just received another application from a flyer that was present at the meeting.  This member had been a member of the Buzzard’s several years ago and was asking to re-join.

Treasurer:

Doug was not present, but Ron stated that the club is in good financial condition. Payments were made to Joe Goffin, Ron and several of the club members. Doug is assembling a budget for 2005 that will be presented next month.

Safety Officer:

Randy reminded all present that safety should always be on our minds.  It was brought up that in the last issue of the AMA magazine that the new safety editor had a good article.  In summary, it mentioned that as we become familiar with working with our hobby that we think we can do this one job without taking all the safety precautions, i.e. wearing safety glasses or gloves.  Remember that this is a fun hobby and a very dangerous one.  Even a simple task could cause harm to you or a bystander.  Always make safety first on your mind.

Committee Reports:

Pilot Training:

Several new members have completed and been checked out from training.  The program is working great and all who have participated said they enjoyed the experience.

Field improvements:

Joe Goffin has sprayed the fence lines for weed control and the field will have turf builder and weed killer spread this month. Suggestions for a new port-a-potty and tables were made.

Local Charity:

Jim Clayton was not present for an updated report. The club has some money in the donation jar.

Old Business:

Ron Swift reminded the membership that 9:00 PM is the agreed time to stop all of wet powered plane flying.  Please adjust your flying schedule.

He then brought up that we would like to have a committee to look into a new location for a flying field.  Some discussion was made on how hard it is to find a good flying field.  Gerald Gunnells, our newest member (welcome back!) stated that he knew the person responsible for administering use of the landfill in Clearview and he would make some inquiries.

Ron stated that no contact has been made with the owner of the welding shop in Monroe as yet and the plaque showing the location of the field has not been done as yet.

Ron has finished the scanner procedures and anyone that would like to learn how to operate it should contact him for training.

New Business:

with Doug, that we are a little over in our current budget in some areas, and lower than expected in others—a pretty normal occurrence, since a budget is actually a plan, not the goal.

At the last meeting we set up a new committee, Flying Site Investigation, which will investigate opportunities for an alternate or secondary flying site . There are currently 3 members on this committee. If you would like to provide input or assistance for this effort, please contact Brian Richardson, Bob Martin, or Gerald Gunnells.

We are nearly at the end of our mowing volunteer list (October 8 is the last date listed), so if the field needs mowing, feel free to cut the grass. After you are done cutting the grass, please remember to sweep the grass from the mowing decks to help keep them from rusting .

See you at the flying field and meetings,

Ron
