Buzzard Droppings April 2003

Text Box: string. The planes then take off, two at a time, with the pilots trying to cut the other plane’s crêpe paper. If a plane looses any part of the crêpe paper it is considered a hit and the event is over. Then the next two planes go at it. The different kinds of planes that have been used were discussed and a comment that one should not use his favorite plane at this event was made.
Club secretary, Bob Martin, passed out the new member packets for 2003. Each packet contained the member’s new ID card, club roster, member’s frequencies, and the updated club Bylaws. He explained that the field gate combination will be changed this week and that the combination is the only security the club has to the field. It is important to protect that combination. Bob then made a few corrections (club member’s frequencies were updated) that were needed after the packet had been printed. We currently have 46 members (41 full members, 4 family members and one honorary member). This is the same number we had on December 31, 2002. Bob then passed out the 2003 mowing list for sign ups, and the members present filled in every remaining open date. The mowing list is complete for this year. Bob thanked those who have taken it upon themselves to mow the field during the winter without being asked. This makes all of our flying experiences pleasant.
The treasurer discussed the current balance and passed out the budget for 2003. It was discussed briefly and approved.
Special Committee Reports:
Ron Swift introduced Randy Turner who represented the team who had volunteered to look into field improvements. Randy stated that they had just met and he needs all members to send suggests for improvements they would like to see at our field to him. He will look into the feasibility of the improvement, and make recommendations to the club.
Ron Swift stated that sound management readings would continue this spring and summer. He stated that currently from past readings we are well within acceptable ranges, but the survey would continue to insure that we do not develop a problem. This is so we do not brother our neighbors.
Old Business:
Ron Swift passed out the Field Rules marked with proposed changes. The members present discussed changes that they would like. One change was discussed regarding clarification of the stipulation for the direction of the plane when starting them. It was determined that the safest way would be to have the plane facing the field and the exhaust going toward the road. In this way if the plane were to get Text Box: away from the pilot it would go into the flying field and not into the pit or spectator area. A motion was made to approve the change to the field rules, it was seconded and passed.
Dave Bell stated that the posting of the field rules should be in a better place and he volunteered to investigate changing the location for posting the AMA safety rules and our club rules.
Bob Martin reported on the progress of club flying instructors. We have 5 members that have been selected to become club instructors. Karl Schaefer - the club’s safety officer, Ron Swift, Rick Hanners, Ray Gilkey and David Bell. These members will meet soon and develop a check list that will be followed when a new member joins. This is to be sure the new member understands the AMA and our field safety rules, boundaries of the field, flying courtesy and knows how to operate their plane in a safe and proper manner. Some discussion was made regarding if the AMA check list should be used. It was stated that that check list is too detailed and it was questioned if we really wanted that much detail. It was decided we did not, and the check list would cover basic flying ability and safety.
Bob Martin also explained that he had obtained the application to change the club to a Not for Profit corporation and he would submit the request to the IRS this spring.
The members broke into smaller groups for refreshments and discussion.
We had a very informative discussion on Flight Simulators lead by Ron Swift. The different programs available, how to load them, and the problems and benefits of each. Many thanks for all who volunteered information.
During show and tell, David Bell brought in his Pete ‘n Poke that he had build from sticks. Rick Hanners brought in his Zagi Fix that he had just completed, and shared interesting problems that he had incurred during the construction. Ron Swift brought in his Saito 450 Radial Black Knight, and explained the break in process.
Doug Hoff announced that the Arlington Fair is April 5 & 6th at the Post Middle School. The club decided not to participate this year, but would consider it next year.
The next club meeting will be on April 1st at 7 PM at the Monroe Library and will include a discussion on Electric flight. Fred Guilfoyle, who only flies electric planes, will lead the discussion.
It was submitted and seconded that the meeting adjourn at 8:30 PM.

(President’s Message Continued from page 1)

forward flight— takeoff and landings only.  I would propose to have a trial period to monitor the situation, making changes to enhance safety of the pilots. In my experience with previous clubs, mixing the various R/C activities was successful once separate areas were provided. Another approach where fixed wing aircraft and hovering activities are allowed on the same active runway has led to many hard feelings and some collisions. We don’t want either of these at our club field. Even Frank Tiano has separate areas at Top Gun.

I have volunteered to coordinate the Open House for this year. We are still looking for a coordinator for the club Fun Fly. Check with Hap if you are interested.

The club instructor volunteers have met to form a club checklist. Rick Hanners has pulled together some information from those who could attend the meeting. We should have a proposal for the club to adopt soon. Thank you, Rick and team!

See you at the flying field, Ron
