Buzzard Droppings December 2002

member.  Karl Schaefer is going to get the pieces for the new board cut out of aluminum.  Dave Weber did the design on his CAD system and presented a drawing of the new board for people to look at.

Members were reminded that the December meeting is going to be held the 2nd Tuesday of the month at Alfy’s pizza.  There will be a nominal $5 charge for an additional guest/family brought by any member.  At the December meeting we will be voting on new club officers and a possible new name for the Newsletter.  It was decided that a list of names for the Newsletter would be voted on at the December meeting.  At the present time the list has a large number of alternatives.  It was agreed that there would be a first vote to choose the top three names and then a final vote among the 3 finalists.

My favorite moment though was a time when my good friend Rick Hanners asked if he could take the sticks of my Zirolli Ringmaster .40 for a few laps.  I had just got the tricky aileron differential figured out on this bird and it was flying better than I could have asked for.  Knowing that Rick is a competent pilot I handed him the controls and watched him take it for a few laps.  Rick handed the box back to me and moments later I was watching in horror as the plane was no longer responding to my inputs.  Down it went, behind the trees, in what was surely a swim in the river.  Thanks to Dick Ovrid we were able to find the pieces.  But of course they were in the middle of the river.  With incredible luck I got the engine and radio gear back with only some wet pants and a few blackberry bush scratches.

Before I sign off I have to thank the many people that have helped out through the past four years.  One of the many at the top of the list is Rick Hanners.  Rick has served as club secretary for the past 5 years and has been a tremendous asset to the club and a great friend to me.  I hope to continue that friendship as the years go on.  I also want to thank Doug Hoff for keeping the club finances in order but

The nominations for club officers continued.  To date the following members have been nominated:

 President - Ron Swift

Vice President - Hap Shutz, Dean Appell

 Secretary - Bob Martin

 Treasurer - Doug Hoff

 Safety Officer - Karl Schaefer

Nominations are still open and will be closed at the December meeting and then a vote taken for the officers.  There was a brief discussion about changing the terms of office for several of the officers, so that changing of the board would always be in a staggered replacement order.  However, the majority of members present were not inclined to investigate such an option.

Our Open House and Open Fun Fly were tentatively scheduled for June 28th and July 26th

most of all for doing the club taxes.  I know that it is bad enough to have to do your own, but to have to do someone else’s has got to be painful.  Dave Bell and Karl Schaefer also deserve a big thanks.  Without their help I would have had to carry a lot more of the load.

The most important goal that I wanted to achieve for this club as president was to start us down the path of becoming a legitimate organization with a member base that would allow us to give back to the community.  I know that the Barnyard Buzzards is a club that is heading in that direction with well over 40 members and I am proud to have been a part of it.

There are a lot of people that have made it possible to accomplish the goals that we as a club have set out and I apologize to those I haven’t mentioned by name. But both you and I know who you are and the club owes you a big thank you.  Let’s keep working toward accomplishing those goals as a club and make this club the best flying club around.
