2-StrokeEngines
Gasoline Fuel
The increased interest in giant aircraft has led to the availability of many good gasoline burning two stroke engines. These engines use a gasoline and oil mixture of 16:1, 20:1, 32:1 or 50:1 gas to oil blend. We have flown models with engines from each of the vendors mentioned in the list below (and more). The engines are generally 2 cubic inches or larger, use less fuel and are generally heavier than their alcohol burning cousins.
Many of the engines are converted chainsaw engines. Others, like the 3W, ZDZ, FUJI and Fox engines were designed specifically for model aircraft. Most come with a Walbro style pumped carb. This carb allows locating the fuel tanks in just about any position desired, since it draws the fuel from the tank and pumps it into the carb.
The engines are available in single cylinder, multiple cylinder, arranged as a V, inline, opposed, and radial configurations. Generally, the multi-cylinder engines have much lower vibration than a single cylinder engine of the same displacement, but produce less power.
Several gasoline burning wacker/chainsaw conversions engines are being sold such as ones from Ryobi, Homelite, Sachs, and Husqvarna.
